About The Dallas Cowboys
The Dallas Cowboys is a franchise that is best characterized by two concepts: Marketing and Risk Taking.
The storied Dallas Cowboys/Washington Redskins rivalry is a well known thing among football fans, but most do not realize that the rivalry did not begin through some activity on the field - it was actually a disagreement between the respective team owners that started this and demonstrated how important marketing was to be for the team from the beginning.
In the late 1950s, an oil baron named Clint Murchison Jr. had a dream. He wanted an NFL team in Dallas. At the time, the founding of an expansion team required the unanimous agreement of all team owners already in the league. This posed a problem because George Preston Marshall, owner of the Washington Redskins had the most southern located team in the league. Enjoying his virtual monopoly on the southern half of the country, Marshall was vetoing all of Murchison's efforts. As a demonstration of how important marketing was to be to the Cowboys from the get-go, Murchison managed to acquire the rights to the Washington Redskins fight song, a huge part of their own marketing efforts. With this leverage in hand, Murchison was able to force Marshall to change his vote and clear the way for the foundation of the Dallas Cowboys. Read More

During the 1980's, bad management decisions and poor performance resulted in a string of terrible seasons for the Cowboys. For your average team, this would have resulted in plummeting ticket sales and financial difficulties, not so for the Dallas Cowboys. They weathered the period fine. Why? Marketing.
During this stretch, a phenomenon swept the world of sports fandom - the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders. All the teams have cheerleaders, they are all attractive and skilled performers. What made the Cowboys cheerleaders so popular? Marketing. No team before or since has put the effort into promoting its cheerleaders that the Cowboys did in the 80s. The success of this campaigned maintained an interest in the team that was far out of proportion to their on field performance.

In the biggest trade in NFL history, coach Jimmy Johnson chose to risk a man who was considered a franchise player, Herschel Walker, for a chance at Super Bowl success down the road. Trading Walker and four relatively low draft picks for five active players and eight draft picks (all but one first and second round), Johnson ensured that the Cowboys were in position to grab quality players in the following years. The gamble paid off with the Cowboys winning the Super Bowl in 1992, 1993, and 1995.
