Concerts and tours have always been a part of civilized society. The ancient Greeks would hold festivals where the best musicians in each city would compete in beautifully built temples. The Romans were known for their love of entertainment, and musicians played a big role in venues such as the Circus Maximus, which could hold 150,000 people for each event. The ancient Indian civilization built special venues for each type of musical style so that every concert would have its special place in the community.
Today, we think of concerts as the rock and roll extravaganzas that criss cross the country, but those events haven't always been around. In 1952, Cleveland disk jockey Alan Freed, who went by the name of Moondog, organized the very first rock concert, the Moondog Coronation Ball. Freed was credited with coining the term rock and roll, and this very first concert had a mix of top performers of the early 50s, such as The Dominoes, Paul "Hucklebuck" Williams, and Tiny Grimes. Like so many rock concerts to follow, the crowd broke out into chaos. A printing error meant that twice as many tickets were sold for the concert as the concert hall had capacity to hold, and the police shut down the music after the very first song. Those fans thought they had found concert tickets for sale, but it turned into a night bound for the history books.
Despite the rough start in rock concert history, bands have toured around the world to bring their music to the masses.
