About Bob Dylan

You cannot talk about American music over the last 50 years without mentioning Bob Dylan. Dylan rose to prominence in the 1960s when many of his songs became the anthems of the civil rights movement. Dylan planted his roots in folk music, and then branched out to rock and popular music.

On May 24, 1941, Robert Allen Zimmerman was born in Duluth, Minnesota. He would later change his name to Bob Dylan. His parents were Ukrainian immigrants who were strong in their Jewish faith. Dylan's love of music started early, and he says he would spend hours listening to country, blues and rock music on the radio.

Dylan started his first bands when he was just a student in high school. In 1959, he became a student at the University of Minnesota, where he became interested in American folk music. It was at this point that he began calling himself Bob Dylan.

Dylan only stayed at the University of Minnesota for his freshman year. After his first year, he dropped out and moved to New York City. In 1962, Dylan signed with manager Albert Grossman. "Bob Dylan," his first album, was released on March 19, 1962. However, it was Dylan's second album, "The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan," that greatly increased his popularity. Read More
