About Barbra Streisand
Singer, songwriter, producer, director, actress, and philanthropist, Barbra Streisand, is one of the most talented, dynamic, and interesting individuals in the world. Barbra Joan Streisand was born on April 24, 1942 in Brooklyn, New York, to Emanuel (father) and Diana (mother), each of Austrian descent. Sadly, a cerebral hemorrhage took Barbra's father from her when she was only 15 months old. The family struggled for several years as a result.
Barbra went to Erasmus Hall High School in Brooklyn. There, she participated in the choral club and chorus. She began singing in nightclubs in her teens and had dreams of becoming an actress. In 1960, Barbra performed a club act at The Lion (a well-known gay nightclub in Greenwich Village, Manhattan) where she began to experience success as a singer. During the next year, Barbra performed in many nightclubs throughout New York and also in San Francisco, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, and Detroit. She also experienced her first TV appearance during this time. She appeared on The Tonight Show with Jack Paar where she sang "A Sleepin' Bee". She was also a regular guest on PM East / PM West, a popular talk series with Mike Wallace and Joyce Davidson. She moved on to act and sing in various Broadway and Off-Broadway productions.
